Committee of Recommendation

George Brooks

Prof. dr. George A. Brooks is the head of the Exercise Physiology Laboratory at UC Berkeley. The research emphasis in the Exercise Physiology Laboratory is in the area of metabolic adjustments to exercise. In recent years, two working hypotheses were developed in the laboratory: the "Lactate Shuttle," and the "Crossover Concept." Research on the Lactate Shuttle is to elucidate the pathways and controls of lactic acid formation and removal before, during and after exercise. Research on the Crossover Concept is to describe and understand how the body selects combinations of fatty acids, carbohydrates and amino acids for use during sustained exercise and other conditions.

Bert Arets

Bert Arets studied medicine at Maastricht University.

After a short stay in the tropics and military service as an internal medicine assistant at the Military Hospital Dr. A. Mathijsen (nowadays Central Military Hospital - trainer Dr. van Zoeren) he started in 1991 as resident pediatrician at the De Wever Hospital (nowadays Atrium Hospital) in Heerlen (trainer Dr. P. Theunisssen), where he started training as a pediatrician in 1992 and from 1993 in the Academic Hospital Maastricht (nowadays Maastricht University Medical Center) (trainers Prof. Kuijten and Prof. Blanco).

In 1997 he continued his career at the UMC Utrecht where, after training as a pediatric pulmonologist (trainer Dr. Brackel), he continued to work as a staff member within the children's division as a pediatric pulmonologist.

He is also an enthusiastic lecturer at the university, especially within the SUMMA (Selective Utrecht Medical Master) program and since 2021 he fulfills the job of SUMMA course director.

Erik Hulzebos

Dr. H.J. (Erik) Hulzebos is a clinical exercise physiologist (ACSM registered), medical physiologist (SMBWO-certified) and (sports) physiotherapist. He works as an assistant professor at the Wilhelmina Children's Hospital, Children's Division, of the University Medical Center Utrecht.

After completing his C.I.O.S. training in Heerenveen (1987, Cum Laude), Dr. Hulzebos completed the Physiotherapy course (1991, Cum Laude) at the Hogeschool Utrecht in combination with the Master Sports Physiotherapy (graduated in 1993). He received his MSc. in “Exercise Physiology” from the Faculty of Health Sciences at Maastricht University in 1998. He received his PhD in 2006 from the Faculty of Medicine at Utrecht University.

His main research and clinical area of interest is clinical (pediatric) exercise physiology. He has conducted studies in various clinical populations with cardio-respiratory disease. Dr. Hulzebos has authored more than 50 peer-reviewed articles and written 5 exercise physiology books.

He is a.o. a member of the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), Pediatric Work Physiology (PWP) Network, Dutch Cystic Fibrosis Foundation (NCFS) – Physiotherapy working group, European Cystic Fibrosis Society (ECFS) and member of the Exercise Working Group in Cystic Fibrosis.

Fred Hartgens

Prof. dr. Hartgens was recently appointed as head of sports medicine and professor in clinical sports medicine. As professor of the UMC Utrecht, one of his goals is to incorporate sports and movement in the curriculum of medical students. In addition, he values prevention of noncommunicable diseases, such as diabetes type II and cardiovascular diseases by lifestyle changes. Hartgens has been a sports doctor since 1995 and founder of the Sportmedisch Adviescentrum Maastricht, a private clinic for sports doctors that he owned until July 1st. At Maastricht UMC+ he mainly saw patients with overuse injuries of the lower leg and at Maastricht University he conducted research into, for example, the role of movement in the prevention and treatment of chronic diseases. The sports doctor taught medical students, bioscientists and general practitioners in training about his field, among others.
