Selective Utrecht Medical Master (SUMMA)

Meet the team

Maarten van Lieshout
Chair
My name is Maarten and I’m the chair of this year's symposium committee. I’m currently really enjoying my time studying SUMMA in Utrecht. Before, I studied Biomedical Sciences in Nijmegen which I ended with a research internship in Barcelona. Exercising and in general being active plays a great role in my life. Iit makes me feel energized, happy and healthy especially when working out together! I play volleyball on a weekly basis but I mostly get excited about training for a nice running race like the Barcelona half marathon!

Bart Lengkeek
Secretary
My name is Bart and in the committee I fulfill the task of secretary. Before SUMMA I studied Technical Medicine at the University of Twente in Enschede. Next to fascination for high-tech innovations, it always fascinated me how with simple, movement related life-style interventions you can make a real impact on someone’s health. In my spare time I really enjoy sports outside such as running and cycling. Also, as of September I started to play volleyball.

Cosme Aranguren-Gonzalez
Treasurer
I’m Cosme, and I’m this year’s treasurer. Originally, I come from Spain, but I finished my Bachelor’s in University College Utrecht. I love travelling, and I like to participate in activities that let you explore a place or that have an interesting cultural aspect to them – like trekking, fencing and horseriding. But my interest for sport as a tool for health and well-being truly sparked when I worked for an NGO called Riding for the Disabled in Singapore – being a horseriding instructor for kids with disabilities and helping them grow and overcome their hardships with their friends (both human and equine) was one of the most inspiring things I’ve ever experienced!

Carina Liao
Public Relations
My name is Carina, and I am the coordinator of public relations for this year’s symposium committee. By promoting our symposium, I hope to spark the audience's interest in performing more physical activity to improve general health. Before SUMMA, I studied Biomedical Sciences at the University of Utrecht. I am interested in neuroscience and the ways that keep our brains healthy. I believe exercising regularly is a major factor in improving cognitive health and emotional balance. As future doctors and health workers, I hope our symposium can highlight the importance of exercising so we can all move towards a healthier future.

Annemijn van den Doel
Acquisition
My name is Annemijn. For this year’s symposium, II will be responsible for the acquisition together with Lara. I did my undergraduate degree in Biomedical sciences. In my spare time I love to cook, do yoga and run. I find it interesting how different types of sports can ask totally different things from your body. For me, exercising helps to clear my mind and deal with stress. Therefore, I’m very interested in the effect of exercising on your mental state

Lara van der Aar
Acquisition
My name is Lara and my function in this commission is acquisition. Before SUMMA I studied Nutrition and Health at Wageningen University. I believe moving and exercising enough is very important, though I’m not very good at any type of sports. I do try to go outside and walk frequently, and go to the gym a couple of times per week to stay healthy.

Julia Wesseling
Coordinator speakers
My name is Julia. Together with Veerle, I do the communication of the speakers and the coordination of the program. I have always loved doing sports, but unfortunately wasn’t always able to because of injuries. This did spark my interest in what kind of effect (a lack of) physical activity has on the human body. Training seven times a week as part of the race rowing team, I got intruiged by the extreme performances possible with our own body.

Veerle Niessen
Coordinator speakers
My name is Veerle and together with Julia I am responsible for the communication with the speakers and the coordination of the program. A few months ago I started studying SUMMA, after finishing my bachelor College of Pharmaceutical Sciences at Utrecht University. Since a very young age I have been practicing sports. At the moment I am training for my first half marathon and first triathlon. Exercising is beneficial for both physical health and mental health, which makes it a broad and interesting theme.
